“What the Press Say”
Should I buy one? – Yes, you should. Very few cars offer this kind of sophisticated all-round package, with brutal performance and everyday usability and, to top it all, a digestible price tag. To call it an astonishing all-rounder might sound like damning it with faint praise, but it really isn’t. It has the dynamic qualities of sports cars that cost many times more, and it’s as practical as, er, a Golf.
What’s it like to drive? – absolutely brilliant. One of the many clever things about the R is that it has such a duality of personality. Indeed, drive off normally and it can be difficult to see what the attraction is from a real enthusiast’s perspective: it’s completely undemanding, comfortable, light to the touch and quiet. A long, and dull, journey, completed primarily in ‘eco’ mode with the ‘box declutching at every opportunity, elicited a high 30s mpg figure.
On the other hand, given more throttle the R positively leaps for the horizon, continuing to rev out with infectious enthusiasm with the ‘box snicking instantly through each successive ratio. It’s the kind of car that feels properly fast anyplace, anytime, especially so given it squanders nothing with the total traction capability of the four-wheel drive system. In fact, while the R isn’t a naturally flamboyant car, it’s far from inert, with the ability to go neutral and then a bit more under full power out of tighter corners.
“The Golf R is an all-rounder with which few come close to matching in all disciplines. Exhilarating pace and genuine practicality ensure it’s a regular pick for the ‘dream’ everyday family car.”
“On the move, the engine is responsive and free-revving, and the performance is nothing short of rapid, zinging along up to and beyond motorway speeds with minimal effort. It even returns fairly palatable fuel economy.”
“The manual does carry a performance deficit over the automatic – in three pedal guise the R gets from 0-62mph in 5.1sec (quicker than the 5.8sec managed in the front-drive Golf GTI Clubsport S) with the automatic R at 4.9sec. Happily, the R’s chassis is never overwhelmed by the performance on offer, displaying poise, genuine adjustability and unrelenting grip, thanks to the standard all-wheel drive setup”
“Once again an enlightened VW offers the choice of either six-speed manual or twin clutch DSG transmissions. Equipped with the twin-clutcher, the R sprints from rest to 62mph in just 4.9sec, which frankly, is a little absurd.”
