“What the Press Say”
Harry Catchpole (with a big grin on his face) said “it’s a lot of fun, a breath of fresh air – I like it a lot “
Subaru has bounced back – but not with an Impreza. At least not by name. This one is known solely as the WRX STi, but everything else is present and correct. 2.5-litre turbocharged boxer four, six-speed manual, 4wd, massive rear wing, unholy grip levels. Even the relative-bargain list price has made a comeback.
The body is 140 per cent stiffer than the previous generation, while there is 16 per cent less body roll thanks largely to spring rates that are 22 per cent stiffer at the front and 6 per cent stiffer at the rear. The steering is still hydraulically rather than electrically power assisted and the rack is 15 per cent quicker thanks to the ratio being changed from 14.8:1 to 12.7:1.
The familiar Multi-mode centre differential is still in place with auto and manual settings, plus Auto, Auto+ and Auto– modes. The basic torque distribution is 50:50, but if you choose Auto+ it limits torque and increases stability in slippery conditions, while selecting Auto– allows more torque to be sent to the rear wheels.
The bodywork, too, is all new, and to our eyes it’s a marked improvement on the bland amorphousness that went before.
Our first drive of the STI has us grinning ear-to-ear for its Tarzan-like grip in the road, its accessible, useable engine punch and it’s accurate steering. Its chassis is so well balanced and the more and more you drive it, the more it melts into you and you start to realise just how good this car is. It’s a supreme point-to-point performer
