Here we have a near new Leon Cupra 280 5 door finished in Emocion Red with Black Hide, it’s a one private owner car and has travelled just 2,298 miles.

Voted by Auto Express as best Hot Hatchback 2014 and a list of £27,565 priced at just £19,995 it’s the best value pre-owned example in the UK too!

The Leon Cupra comes with dual-zone climate, tinted rear glass, front and rear parking sensors, Bluetooth, USB, SD card and aux-in capability. Also featured is the Media System Plus, which means it gets wired links, including an iPod connector. The Bluetooth phone connection is faultless, telephone operation is via the Flat Bottomed Multi Function Steering Wheel. The Plus ICE system will feed sound to eight speakers, with the sources including a standard DAB tuner. In keeping with its range-topping status, the 280 model gets sat-nav as standard. The 5.8in touchscreen and voice activation. Route guidance is also displayed on the smaller colour screen in the instrument cluster. This example also has the £355 Winter Pack with Heated Seats and Headlamp Washers.

This latest Cupra, in full-fat 280 form, is available only in the 5 door version. It’s a real pocket rocket too with 0-60 coming up in just 5.9 seconds! And with an average 42.8mpg, 154g/km CO2, running costs aren’t going to break the bank either!

Suspension is by MacPherson struts at the front and a multi-link set-up at the rear, while drive goes through an electronically controlled, hydraulically actuated multi-plate differential. Whatever the set-up, the goal, as ever, is to transfer power to the more heavily loaded outside wheel when cornering. The diff can send up to 100 per cent of power to the wheel with most grip.

The Cupra 280 also features Dynamic Chassis Control, which functions via variably valved dampers whose stiffness is continually adjusted and whose outer limits are set through a Cupra Drive Profile you can set yourself!

This is also the manual 6 speed gearbox version and Autocar Magazine said when road tested

“Distinguishing between gearboxes is much easier. Beyond hardcore starts the DSG is a typically well-mannered transmission, but it serves up none of the manual’s interactive qualities. Easy to manage, direct and with a quick throw, the cheaper option is a rewarding companion whether you’re flat out or mired in traffic. There are some advantages to choosing the auto ‘box – as well as being quicker, it’s slightly more economical – but you need to be deeply concerned by such things to ignore the manual’s entertainment factor”

Car Magazine said

“So is it better than a Golf Gti

On paper, yes. The Leon, which uses the same MQB platform as the Golf and Audi A3, is powered by the same 2.0-litre turbocharged engine as the GTI as well. There’s an entry-level version for £26k – three doors, six-speed manual, and a Renaultsport Megane-matching 261bhp – but that’s an entrée to the real treat here: the 276bhp ‘Cupra 280’. The 280 means PS, of course, which is 60PS (59bhp) more than a regular GTI (217bhp) and, if you pay extra for the Performance (profit) pack on your Golf, you’ll get 227bhp and a sports diff.

You still haven’t said if it’s better than a Golf GTI

This is a tough call, especially not having had the pair back-to-back. Yet the Leon is not gunning for Golf: it’s chasing the Megane RS and the Focus ST, as well as the VXR Astra. The comparison to its stablemate is inevitable, though, and the one thing Seat cannot offer is an iconic nameplate. That, in turn, makes a Golf seem the smarter choice, with better resale. Yet for that, you get less equipment and not as much punch as the Leon.

The thing is, the GTI is all about balance: it does everything really well. The Cupra, with its extra power, isn’t a better car because of it, but factor in the extra gear, and it’s exceptional value. And brilliant as it is, buying a Golf GTI is hardly an inspired choice. Seat’s just made it that bit harder to decide”
