“What the Press Say”
The sequel to one of the best fast Fords of all time. The last ST was a best-in-class, Top Gear Car of the Year-winning, affordable, fun and fast tonic of a hot hatch. So you’d forgive Ford for playing it ultra-safe with the new one. A couple more horsepower and a smarter interior, perhaps. Nope. Ford’s gambled massively, and installed a smaller engine, clever fuel-saving tech and driving modes, while keeping power on par with the old car.
Ford started with a ‘Mk8’ Fiesta some 71mm longer than the ‘Mk7’, whose front track width had already grown by 30mm compared with that of its predecessor. But the Ford Performance in-house tuning team went wider again on that driven axle, ending up with a whopping 48mm increase on track
The new Fiesta’s cabin is vastly more intuitive than the old car’s, and the ST’s inherited the lot. Clear dials, a comprehensive screen between the clockfaces, and best of all, a crisp, clear, fast-reacting touchscreen that’s front’n’centre atop the air vents.
ST’s gain a comfortable, chunky flat-bottomed steering wheel, part-alloy gearknob, bright-finish pedals and hugely bolstered Recaro bucket seats
So, the big change. The engine is a new 1.5-litre, three-cylinder EcoBoost unit that’s all-new and vastly more economical than the old car’s 1.6-litre four-cylinder. In our testing it’s so far averaged 38mpg and managed over 45mpg on the motorway. Not bad for outputs totaling 197bhp and 214lb ft.
The ST’s trademark of a super-pointy front end is intact here. Spec the Performance Pack and once the quick steering – just two turns lock-to-lock – has darted the nose into the bend, you’re aided by a proper Quaife limited-slip diff instead of ESP fakery
The Performance Pack also adds a microscopic shift-up light to the dash, and launch control that pegs the revs at 3,500rpm. Most folks will have to have it.
